Weight-loss medications like Wegovy, have gained significant attention in recent years. Available only as an injection, this limits individuals who are looking for an oral formulation

Wegovy tablets have already been introduced in the US and are currently undergoing regulatory reviews in the UK. Many patients are keen to understand how these tablets work and how they compare with existing injectable treatments. We will provide an overview of all the essential information.

  • Needle free, oral tablet
  • Same active ingredient semaglutide as the Wegovy injection
  • Once daily treatment
  • Prescription only weight loss treatment
  • Mimics natural hormones to reduce hunger and slow stomach emptying
  • Weight loss up to 16.6%
  • Not yet available in the UK, currently being reviewed for safety and efficacy

What is the Wegovy tablet and how does it work ?

The Wegovy tablet contains the same active ingredient semaglutide, as used in the well known Wegovy weight loss injection.

Semaglutide belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines are designed to imitate a naturally occurring hormone in the body, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) which is released after eating. This hormone is released in the gut after eating and plays a role in suppressing appetite, digestion and regulating blood sugar balance.

By mimicking the effects of GLP-1, oral semaglutide helps people feel fuller, quicker and for longer periods after meals. It can reduce hunger signals, food cravings and also slow the rate at which the stomach empties food into the intestine.

In combination these effects support lower calorie intake and more consistent blood sugar control, which contributes to gradual and sustained weight loss.

Dosing and Formulation

Unlike the injectable version, oral Wegovy is formulated as a once-daily tablet offering an alternative for patients who prefer not to self inject or are seeking a more convenient administration method. Oral Wegovy has been specifically developed for weight management rather than diabetes treatment.

Similar to the injections, the tablets are expected to be available in graduated dose strengths, allowing treatment to begin at a lower dose before increasing over time. This is designed to help the body adjust to the medication and to reduce the likelihood of side effects that are commonly associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists.

The 30 minute rule and how to take the Wegovy pill.

Oral Wegovy must be taken correctly in order for the medication to to be absorbed properly.

  • Take first thing in the morning on an empty stomach
  • Swallow whole with a small sip of plain water ( no more than 120ml)
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water or taking other oral medications

Eating too soon or consuming additional liquids can significantly reduce how much of the medication is absorbed and lessen its overall effectiveness.

Side effects

The side-effect profile of oral Wegovy is expected to be similar to the injectable form, with the most commonly reported issues being gastrointestinal ( GI) symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain

In most cases these symptoms are mild and tend to settle as the body adjusts to the medication over time. Because the tablet is taken daily and absorbed through the digestive tract, some individuals may experience slightly higher rates of nausea compared with injections, although this can vary between patients.

Trial results: Does a pill work as well as a jab?

Although there is no head to head data, clinical trials have shown that both oral and injectable forms of Wegovy can support significant weight loss, even though they differ in administration and absorption.

In the OASIS-4 trial, adults taking the 25 mg daily oral tablet lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. In separate studies:

  • Wegovy 2.4mg injections produced weight loss of 17.5% and
  • The higher 7.2mg dose produced 20.7%.

While the injection offers once-weekly dosing and more consistent absorption, the oral tablet may be an option for those who prefer a needle free alternative or have difficulty with weekly routines. Ultimately the choice depends on individual preference, lifestyle, and clinical considerations, as well as availability.

Currently oral Wegovy is not available in the UK and is pending regulatory approval.

When is Oral Wegovy going to be available to buy in the UK?

Oral Wegovy is not yet available in the UK, and is currently undergoing regulatory review by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Approval is expected later this year, after which the tablet may become available through private clinics and regulated online pharmacies such as Quick Meds.

Following MHRA approval, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) will also assess the medication to determine whether it should be offered on the NHS.

FAQs

Is there already an oral form of semaglutide available in the UK?

Yes. The only oral semaglutide currently available in the UK is Rybelsus, which was the first GLP-1 receptor agonist developed as a tablet. It is licensed for type 2 diabetes and available on the NHS for that use. Some providers may prescribe it off-label for weight loss, although this is not its primary licensed indication.

Is Ozempic available in pill form ?

No. Ozempic is only available as an injectable pen for type 2 diabetes. However the same active ingredient Semaglutide is currently found in Rybelsus and Wegovy tablets.

Can I switch from the Wegovy injection to the tablet?

Yes, under clinical guidance patients would be able to switch from one to the other. If you are struggling with the injection routine or side effects you should speak to your healthcare provider for alternative options.

Are there other oral medications in development?

Yes. Several pharmaceutical companies are developing non injectable weight loss medications, including additional oral GLP-1 and dual hormone therapies. Most are still in clinical trial stages and are not yet approved in the UK, but indicate that more oral based treatment options may become available in the coming years.

What advantages does the tablet have over the injections?

The main advantage of the tablet is that it removes the need for needles, injection pens or sharps disposal.

Another advantage is storage, unlike injectable pens that require refrigeration before use, tablets can typically be kept at room temperature ,making them easier to travel with and store discreetly at home.
