How to Prevent Pen Issues

The Mounjaro KwikPen is a high-quality medical device, but it needs to be handled correctly to ensure you get all 4 doses.

  • Prime Every Time: Unlike some other pens, you should perform a "flow check" (priming) before every single injection to ensure the needle is working.
  • No Needle, No Dial: Never try to turn the dose knob or press the button unless a needle is firmly attached. This creates internal pressure that can damage the pen.
  • One-Way Trip: The pen is designed to deliver 4 doses. Once the 4th dose is taken, the knob will not turn any further. Do not force it.
  • Protect the Tip: If dust or debris gets into the mechanism, it can jam. Always keep the large pen cap on when not in use. Fresh Needle Weekly: Never reuse or "recycle" needles. This leads to blockages, skin infections, and inaccurate dosing.

Solving Common Problems

The dose knob is hard to push down

  • The Cause: Usually a blocked needle or a build-up of pressure inside the cartridge.
  • The Fix:
    • Check the needle: Remove it and attach a brand new needle, straight on.
    • Reset: Turn the dose knob back to '0'.
    • Pressure Release: Gently press the button while it is at '0'.
    • Try again: Dial your dose and press slowly. Hold for 10 seconds until the window returns to '0'.

The dose knob won't turn or feels jammed

  • The Cause: Debris in the dial or trying to dial without a needle.
  • The Fix:
    • Clean the area around the dose knob.
    • Ensure a needle is screwed on straight and the inner needle isn't bent..
    • If you have already taken 4 doses, the pen is empty and the knob is supposed to lock.

No liquid appears when priming

  • The Fix:
    • Attach a new needle; the current one may be defective.
    • Ensure the needle is screwed on straight.
    • You can try to prime the pen up to two times. If no liquid appears, do not use the pen and contact us.

The red seal at the tip is bulging or broken

  • The Cause: This is a sign of high pressure, usually caused by trying to use the pen without a needle or with a bent needle.
  • The Fix:
    • Slight Bulge: Attach a new needle, reset the dial to '0', and press the button to release the pressure.
    • Seal Popped Out/Broken: Do not use the pen. Contact Quick Meds immediately for advice.

Medicine is leaking during your injection

  • The Cause: The needle wasn't on tight enough, or the "10-second rule" wasn't followed.
  • The Fix:
    • Ensure the needle is screwed on straight and firmly.
    • After the dose reaches '0', count to 10 slowly before pulling the needle out of your skin.
    • If you lose a dose, make a note of it so you don't run out of medication early.

I see air bubbles in the window

  • Don't panic: Small air bubbles are normal and will not harm you.
  • The Fix: To reduce them, tap the side of the pen gently with the needle pointing up before you prime it.

Can’t get the last dose?

  • If you've had 4 doses: The pen has done its job! It is normal for a small amount of liquid to remain in the glass - this is "spare" liquid that cannot be reached.
  • If you still have doses left: Change the needle, reset to '0', and try to prime again. If it still won't dial, the mechanism may be damaged.
