Information

Zomig tablets contain zolmitriptan, and are used to treat migraine attacks. They work by interrupting pain signals and blood flow in the head to relieve symptoms, supporting daily functioning and protecting mental well being.

More than just a headache, migraines are a common neurological condition affecting 6 million people in the UK. In most cases, migraines don't respond to standard painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen, requiring specific treatments like Zomig.

Manage your migraines now by requesting Zomig online at Quick Meds. Our GPhC registered pharmacists are happy to help support your treatment needs.

What is Zomig and how does it work

Containing the drug zolmitriptan, Zomig differs from over the counter painkillers in that it belongs to a group of drugs called triptans.

During a migraine attack, blood vessels swell up, putting pressure on nerves. This is what causes the pain, light sensitivity and nausea associated with a migraine.

Triptan medicines work by narrowing these blood vessels - reducing pressure on the nerves. They additionally interrupt pain signals and reduce inflammation, further helping with pain and other symptoms.

All triptan medicines, including Zomig are used to treat a migraine once it occurs, and not as a preventative treatment.

Active ingredient Zolmitriptan
Onset of Action 30-45 minutes
Peak effect Between 1.5-2hours
Duration of action 4-6 hours
Available strengths 2.5mg
Legal status Prescription only medicine

How to take it

The recommended dose for Zomig is one 2.5mg tablet taken to treat a migraine attack. A second tablet can be taken if needed but not within 2 hours of the first dose.

Zomig should not be used as a preventative measure and must only be used to treat active migraine symptoms.

If 2.5mg does not provide satisfactory relief, the dose can be increased to 5mg (two tablets) providing no more than 10mg (four tablets) are taken in a 24 hour period.

Side effects

As with all medicines, Zomig can cause side effects though not everyone gets them

Common

The most common side effects, which may affect up to 1 in 10 people, are usually mild and often resolve without treatment. They include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Abnormal sensations, such as tingling
  • Palpitations
  • nausea/vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Abdominal pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Muscle weakness

Uncommon

Less common side effects, which may affect up to 1 in 100 people, may also be mild and include:

  • A fast heartbeat
  • Increases in blood pressure
  • Increased urinary frequency

Rare/Serious if applicable

Rarer side effects may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people. Some of these side effects may require urgent medical attention such as:

  • Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction)
  • Angina pectoris (chest pain)
  • Heart attack
  • Coronary vasospasm
  • Bloody diarrhoea/severe abdominal pain

Zomig tablets are not suitable if you take other migraine treatments, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, a previous stroke or TIA, or if you are allergic to zolmitriptan or any of the tablet ingredients.

Eligibility

Not everyone who suffers from headaches is eligible for Zomig treatment. As it acts on blood vessels and other receptors in the brain, a clinical assessment is required to ensure it is safe for you.

Who can take it

Zomig is indicated for adults ages 18-65 who have been formally diagnosed with migraines from a healthcare professional.

You should only take Zomig if:

  • Your doctor has confirmed you suffer from migraine, with or without aura.
  • You have tried painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen which haven’t worked.

Who cannot take it

Zomig tablets are contraindicated and should not be taken by anyone who has:

  • A history of heart attack, angina or Prinzmetal’s angina
  • A history of stroke or TIA
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Moderate to severe hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome or other arrhythmias
  • Severe kidney problems
  • A hypersensitivity to Zolmitriptan or other ingredients in the tablet

Will another triptan be better for me?

Apart from zolmitriptan, there are many other drugs within the same class, such as sumatriptan, which was the first generation triptan to be discovered.

The differences between the treatments were studied and highlighted below:

Drug Therapeutic gain (2h) Main advantage Key characteristic
Sumatriptan (100mg) 32% The ‘gold standard’ First generation drug
Zomig (2.5mg) 32% Balanced profile Better absorption than sumatriptan
Rizatriptan (10mg) 37% Speed Faster absorption
Eletriptan (40mg) 37% High potency Longer half-life
Almotriptan(12.5mg) 26% Tolerability Good safety profile
Naratriptan (2.5mg) 22% Lower recurrence Headache is less likely to return
Frovatriptan (2.5mg) 16% Longest Half-life Stays in the body longest

From this study, we can see Zomig offers a balanced profile between all the treatments, comparing effectiveness to tolerability though other treatments such as rizatriptan may get to work faster.
