Information

Tadalafil is a medication that's used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), as well as benign prostatic enlargement (a non-cancerous enlarged prostate), and pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).

It belongs to a family of medications known as phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors that work to relax the blood vessels and increase blood flow.

When used for erectile dysfunction, tadalafil can be taken when required (at least 30 minutes before sex) or every day. When taken as needed, the dose of tadalafil is 10mg, whilst the tadalafil daily dose starts at 2.5mg.

Tadalafil daily is most suitable as an ED treatment for men who are sexually active regularly. Men with erectile dysfunction who have sex occasionally may prefer to take tadalafil when needed. Tadalafil daily is also suitable for men with benign prostate enlargement.

Unbranded Cialis: What You Need to Know

Until 2017, tadalafil could only be sold under the brand name Cialis due to licensing rules. Since then, "unbranded Cilalis", or generic tadalafil, has also been available in the UK.

Generic Cialis contains the exact same active ingredient as Cialis: tadalafil. The main differences are the price, and that different pharmaceutical companies make the medications. As generic tadalafil is much cheaper, patients can save a lot of money by choosing the unbranded option.

A 'generic' drug must be identical to the active ingredient in the branded version and perform the same way in order to qualify as a generic.

How Do Tadalafil 2.5mg & 5mg Tablets Work?

In short, it lets your blood vessels relax so you can achieve an erection (when you're sufficiently sexually aroused)

Tadalafil is a PDE5 inhibitor, which means it stops the enzyme phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) from working. Normally, PDE5 breaks down the chemical messengers that relax the smooth muscle found in blood vessel walls.

By blocking PDE5 and stopping it from working, the chemical messengers stay in the body for longer, allowing the blood vessels to relax and increasing blood flow to the penis. Tadalafil won't cause you to have spontaneous erections - you need to feel sexually aroused in order to get an erection.

When taking tadalafil daily, the drug is already present in the body so there's no need to need a tablet before having sex. This allows you to be more spontaneous with sexual activity, as you don't need to plan in advance.

The starting dose of tadalafil daily is 5mg which may be reduced to 2.5mg daily depending on how you respond. However, tadalafil may not be suitable for you if you're suffering from side effects or have additional health conditions.

Comparison to Tadalafil 10mg & 20mg

If you're having sexual intercourse twice a week or less, it may be better for you to take a larger dose of tadalafil immediately before sex. A 10mg tadalafil dose is common when taken as required, but 20mg may be suggested if you don't respond well to 10mg.

10mg and 20mg doses can be more effective for men who only want to take the medication when they need it. These larger doses may help men who fail to respond to smaller doses, but shouldn't be taken unless recommended by a medical professional.

A larger dose may increase the risk of side effects. It's important not to take more than one tablet a day, even if you have sex several times.

Why Choose Tadalafil Daily Tablets?

Convenience and Flexibility

Once you get into the habit of taking a daily tablet for your erectile dysfunction, tadalafil daily can lead to a more flexible and spontaneous sex life. You'll already feel the effects of the medication once you become aroused and don't need to interrupt the moment to take your tablet.

Daily tadalafil is most suitable for men who generally have sex frequently - around 3 or more times a week.

Treatment for BPH

Tadalafil is also taken daily to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), usually at a 5mg dose. Tadalafil also relaxes the smooth muscle in the bladder which can help improve the urinary symptoms that come with BPH.

How to Take Tadalafil 2.5mg & 5mg Daily Tablets

Take your tadalafil daily at the prescribed dose and at approximately the same time every day, with or without food. If you forget a dose, take your missed dose as soon as you remember unless it's immediately before your next dose of tadalafil - then you should skip the dose and continue with your normal dose.

Before taking tadalafil, it's important to discuss your medical history and the medications you take with a healthcare professional to make sure tadalafil is suitable for you.

Who Should Avoid Tadalafil Tablets?

Anyone who has had a heart attack in the past 90 days, has very low blood pressure or has an eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy should not take tadalafil unless instructed otherwise by a doctor.

Men with uncontrolled high blood pressure, angina, heart failure, an uncontrolled irregular heartbeat, or who've had a recent stroke should also avoid tadalafil.

Other health conditions may affect how safe it is for you to take tadalafil, including a deformity of the penis (like Peyronie’s disease), heart disease, and any conditions that increase the risk of developing priapism (and painful erection that won't go down). It's important to talk to a doctor about whether it's safe for you to take tadalafil if you have any of these conditions.

Tadalafil daily isn't always suitable for people with kidney or liver problems. Those with liver and kidney disease may not be able to take tadalafil daily depending on how severe their condition is. They may also require a lower dose of tadalafil and benefit from taking tadalafil as required rather than daily.

Drug Interactions and Warnings

Potential Drug Interactions

Lots of different drugs can interact with tadalafil, including prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Some medications have more serious interactions and shouldn't be taken with tadalafil, including:

  • Certain anti-seizure medications like carbamazepine

  • Some antibiotics like clarithromycin and erythromycin

  • Nitrites like glyceryl trinitrate and isosorbide dinitrate

  • Anti-fungal medications like itraconazole and ketoconazole

  • Alpha blockers like doxazosin

It's important to discuss any medications you're taking now or have taken recently with a healthcare professional. Tadalafil should not be taken with other ED medication as this can worsen any side effects like low blood pressure.

Alcohol and Food Interactions

Certain types of food and drink can also interact with tadalafil daily tablets. If you drink a lot of grapefruit juice, it can interfere with blood tadalafil levels, making it much less effective.

Alcohol in large amounts can worsen the blood pressure-lowering effects of tadalafil, causing dizziness, headaches, and making you feel sick. It's best to limit your alcohol intake to no more than 4 alcoholic drinks when taking tadalafil.

Side Effects of Tadalafil Daily

The most common side effects of tadalafil include headaches, muscle pain, nasal congestion, flushing, and stomach pain. These side effects affect up to 1 in 100 people who take the medication.

Uncommon side effects include heart arrhythmias and palpitations, dizziness, eye pain, chest pain, breathing difficulties, fatigue, acid reflux, high or low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, skin reactions, tinnitus, and vision disorders. These side effects affect between 1 in 100 and 1000 people who take tadalafil tablets.

Rarely, tadalafil can lead to serious side effects like strokes, heart attacks, memory loss, eye problems, and hearing loss. Tadalafil can also cause serious allergic reactions in very rare cases, leading to airway swelling, breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness and even death.

If you experience any serious side effects, call 999 or 111 for a non-emergency situation. It's important to discuss any other side effects with a healthcare professional - they may suggest an alternative medication.

Understanding Tadalafil Pricing and Availability

Tadalafil is often a much more cost-effective erectile dysfunction treatment than Cialis. At Quick Meds, a Cialis pack containing 4 tablets of 10mg costs £37.95, whilst a pack containing 4 10mg unbranded tadalafil tablets costs £8.95. You may not notice the cost difference so much if you use tadalafil occasionally, but if you're taking tadalafil daily, the cost difference adds up.

Both Cialis and unbranded tadalafil contain the same active ingredient, but some people choose to use Cialis as they know the brand name. Cialis was the first brand of tadalafil on the market and has been being produced for the longest time.

Unbranded tadalafil can be made by a variety of different pharmaceutical companies. If you purchase your tadalafil from Quick Meds, we'll do our best to honour your request for any particular brand. However, the type of tadalafil you receive will depend on availability.

Additional Tips for Managing Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is a very common condition, especially in men over 40. Medication isn't the only thing you can do to treat erectile dysfunction - lifestyle changes can also make a big difference. Here are our top 3 lifestyle tips for managing ED:

  • Try to lose weight

Losing weight is one way to improve your erectile function. One study found that around one third of overweight and obese men could cure their ED by losing weight. If your BMI is higher than 25, losing weight may help improve your erectile dysfunction symptoms.

  • Stop smoking

Several studies have found a link between smoking and erectile dysfunction. After stopping smoking, many men find that their ED symptoms improve.

  • Exercise more

Exercising is a natural way to boost nitric oxide levels - a chemical involved in blood vessel relaxation. It's also a great way to manage stress and lose weight, which are two other factors that can worsen erectile dysfunction.

Whilst lifestyle changes are important, many men want a quicker way to manage their ED. Viagra (sildenafil), vardenafil, and avanafil are alternative ED medications that are part of the same drug family as tadalafil. This means they work similarly, but may last for a different amount of time. Some people get on better with certain medications, so just because one medication didn't work well for you doesn't mean that another one won't help.

For advice on which ED medication could be best for you, speak to a healthcare professional. Most erectile dysfunction medications require a prescription, but some are available over the counter (including Viagra Connect and Cialis Together).

If medication hasn't worked for you, or you're experiencing side effects, make an appointment to discuss this with your doctor. They can also advise you on the other ED treatments that are available, including injections, pumps, and implants.

FAQs

Is Tadalafil daily safe for long-term use?

If you have been prescribed tadalafil daily after a healthcare professional has assessed you, it should be safe for you to take the medication. Studies suggest00585-2/abstract) that taking tadalafil daily, even at a higher dose than 5mg, is safe for longer than 24 months.

Is daily Tadalafil as strong as Viagra?

Neither erectile dysfunction treatment is "stronger" than the other as they contain different active ingredients that work for different lengths of time. Both erectile dysfunction tablets can be effective, but a healthcare professional can advise you on which one is more suitable for you based on your medical history.

Can I drink alcohol while taking tadalafil?

Drinking lots of alcohol can make it difficult to get an erection and can worsen the blood pressure-lowering side effects of tadalafil. It's best to only drink a small amount of alcohol when taking tadalafil.

Can I take Tadalafil 2.5mg twice a day?

You should never take any medication in a way that hasn't been prescribed for you. Tadalafil daily is commonly prescribed as a 2.5mg or 5mg dose taken once a day and should not be taken twice a day unless specified by a doctor.

How long does it take for Tadalafil daily to work?

Tadalafil typically takes 30-60 minutes to work and, as with all erectile dysfunction tablets, you'll need to be sexually aroused to experience an erection. Taking tadalafil daily should boost your sexual performance and improve erectile function throughout the day, meaning you don't have to wait for the tablet to work to have sex.

Does Tadalafil increase sexual desire?

Tadalafil doesn't improve sexual desire, and you'll still need to be sexually aroused to achieve an erection. Tadalafil works by improving blood flow to the penis, not by impacting your libido. However, you may find that your sex drive improves once your body becomes more responsive to sexual stimulation.

Is Tadalafil the same as Cialis?

Yes, Cialis also contains the active ingredient tadalafil. The only differences between Cialis and tadalafil are the name, the price, and the pharmaceutical companies that produce them. Some people prefer to choose Cialis as it's a brand name they're familiar with.

What should I do if I experience side effects?

Many side effects improve as your body gets used to the medication, so it may be worth waiting any side effects out if they're not severe. If your side effects are bothering you or are severe, speak to a healthcare professional about them and whether it would be better to switch to an alternative erectile dysfunction treatment.

If you experience any serious side effects, including signs of a severe allergic reaction, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Can I switch between daily Tadalafil and on-demand?

Yes, it's possible to switch from tadalafil daily to tadalafil on-demand. Your doctor may suggest the switch if you're having sex less than three times a week or experiencing side effects. You may need to wait a few days after taking your last tadalafil daily dose before taking an on demand tablet, as the medication stays in the body for 36 hours.

Never take both types of tadalafil together unless instructed to by a doctor, as this can lead to side effects.

What’s the difference between Tadalafil and Sildenafil (Viagra)?

Both tadalafil and Viagra are effective erectile dysfunction treatments that belong to the same family of drugs. However, they both contain different active ingredients. Viagra contains the active ingredient sildenafil which last for 2-3 hours, whilst tadalafil lasts for up to 36 hours. Both medications come at different dose strengths, and can be taken daily or as required.

Although both tadalafil and Viagra typically require a prescription, Viagra Connect and Cialis Together are versions that are available to buy over the counter.
