Alprostadil is a vasodilator that works locally to relax blood vessels in the penis, allowing increased blood flow during sexual arousal. This should lead to an erection firm enough for sexual activity.
Vitaros works to address the symptoms of erectile dysfunction but does not treat the physical underlying cause or increase sexual desire.
How to take it
Formulation & dose
Vitaros is a topical urethral cream containing Alprostadil. It is available in a 3mg/g dose and each container contains 100mg of cream including 300mcg of Alprostadil. Each pack of Vitaros contains 4 single dose and single use containers.
Vitaros cream should be applied as needed once per 24 hours and no more than 2-3 times per week.
It is a prescription only treatment and should be used exactly as directed by your prescriber.
Directions for use
Before applying Vitaros cream it is recommended to urinate first. After removing the cap, you will need to apply all the contents of the cream into the opening at the tip of the penis 5-30 minutes before attempting intercourse. Please follow the instructions below:
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Remove the AccuDose container from the sachet but save the sachet for discarding the container after use.
- If you haven't removed the medication from the fridge earlier, bring the AccuDose container to room temperature by rolling it between your hands.
- Twist the plunger several times to make sure it glides easily and then remove the cap from the tip of the container.
- Hold your penis upright with one hand and gently squeeze the tip to widen the opening (Note, if you’re uncircumcised, retract your foreskin first before squeezing the tip).
- With your spare hand place the applicator tip as close to the penis opening as possible ( do not insert it inside) and push down the plunger to release all the cream.
- Hold the penis in an upright position for approximately 30 seconds to allow the cream to penetrate and then gently move any excess cream to the opening of the penis with a clean finger.
- Replace the cap on the container and place this into the original sachet before discarding in your household rubbish.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after use as Vitaros can irritate the eyes.
- Avoid urinating immediately after application due to the risk of the drug coming out before its effect takes place.
Titration considerations
Your prescriber may adjust the strength and frequency based on effectiveness and tolerability. Vitaros should not be used the same as any other ED treatments. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact your supplier for further details.
Eligibility
Vitaros cream is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adult men aged 18 years and over
