Information
What is Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)?
Mounjaro is an injectable medicine initially used to treat type 2 diabetes but is now also used for weight management. An injectable medicine, Mounjaro ranges in doses from 2.5mg to 15mg, administered once weekly.
Mounjaro was approved for use in weight loss by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in November 2023. This essentially confirms the necessary investigations have been carried out, assessing safety and effectiveness.
A prescription-only medication, Mounjaro contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide. This works on two different pathways in the body which play a role in controlling hunger cues whilst also stabilising blood sugar levels. In doing so, patients can expect to eat less and therefore lose weight.
How Does the Mounjaro Pen Work for Weight Loss?
Tirzepatide mimics two naturally occurring hormones in the body. The first of these is glucose insulinotropic polypeptide or GIP. When released in the small intestine, GIP stimulates insulin release which helps to keep blood sugar levels low after eating, thus improving blood sugar control.
The natural rhythm of the body is to release GIP in response to a meal that is high in fat or sugar, but this drops quickly. Tirzepatide allows for GIP to stay around for longer, triggering greater insulin release.
The second hormone Tirzepatide mimics is the glucagon-like peptide-1 or GLP-1. This also stimulates insulin release but additionally acts in the brain to make you feel fuller for longer. It also slows the emptying of the stomach. In doing so, this leads to a reduced food intake, helping support weight loss.
Tirzepatide is the first weight loss medication which activates both of these pathways and when compared to other weight loss injections such as Wegovy, it may produce greater weight loss.
Who Should Consider Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is indicated for weight management alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity in patients with:
-
A BMI of 30 or greater
-
BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea.
This means you should have tried to lose weight through exercise and dietary changes first, and should continue to follow a healthy diet and regular exercise regime whilst taking the medication.
Mounjaro can also be prescribed by a doctor for type 2 diabetes management. Usually, Mounjaro is reserved for diabetic individuals who are struggling to manage their blood sugar levels with other drugs or can't take certain diabetes medications. This must be carefully monitored and therefore not all online doctor clinics may prescribe for this indication. In diabetic patients, Mounjaro may lead to complications such as diabetic retinopathy.
Mounjaro isn't suitable for everyone, including individuals who:
-
Are allergic to the drug or any ingredient contained within the pen
-
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
-
Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 (MEN 2)

Starting Treatment with Mounjaro
Mounjaro is injected once weekly. Choose a day that suits your schedule to make it easier to stick to this regime. If you need to change the day of the week, make sure there are at least 3 days (72 hours) between doses.
If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, as long as it's within 4 days (96 hours) of missing the dose. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your normal scheduled day. Do not take 2 doses of Mounjaro within 3 days of each other.
The typical starting dose of Mounjaro is 2.5 mg, once weekly. The dose is usually increased by 2.5 mg every 4 weeks until the maintenance dose is reached. Often the maintenance dose is 15 mg, as this is the highest dose that's licensed for use.
Make sure to let your prescriber know if you're experiencing side effects of Mounjaro, as this may be a sign that they need to adjust the dosing schedule.

How to Take Mounjaro: Step-by-Step Injection GuideMaintenance Dose and Adjustments
Many people take a Mounjaro maintenance dose of 15 mg. It takes at least 21 weeks to build up to this dose but may take longer if you need to increase the dose more slowly.
Remember, the goal is not to get to the highest possible dose but to work with your prescriber to use the lowest, most effective dose for you.
Many people experience significant weight loss results at a maintenance dose lower than 15 mg. A healthcare provider may suggest a lower maintenance dose in some cases, including if you can't tolerate a higher dose due to side effects. If you're experiencing side effects, your prescriber may also decide to increase the dose more gradually.
Do not adjust your dose unless instructed to do so by a healthcare professional.

Is Mounjaro Available on the NHS?
Yes, Mounjaro is now available on the NHS as a weight loss treatment. Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released in June 2024 state that Mounjaro may be prescribed on the NHS to help people with a BMI of ≥35 AND a weight-related health condition to lose weight.
However, not all clinicians may be willing to prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss, and you might need to access the medication through a specialist NHS weight management service.
Benefits of Using Mounjaro as a Weight Loss Treatment
Significant Weight Loss Results
Mounjaro (and its active ingredient Tirzepatide) has demonstrated impressive weight loss results in scientific studies. Several clinical trials have measured the weight reduction abilities of Tirzepatide compared to a placebo injection over a period of 72 weeks.
The clinical trial SURMOUNT-1 found that weekly Tirzepatide doses of 5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg significantly reduced participants' body weight. On average, individuals taking the highest dose of 15 mg lost up to 22.5% of their initial body weight. Of the people taking 15 mg of Mounjaro, 91% lost at least 5% of their body weight, compared to 35% in the placebo group.
Another clinical trial called SURMOUNT-2 followed patients with type 2 diabetes who received 10 mg or 15 mg of Tirzepatide weekly. They found that these patients lost an average of 15% of their initial body weight.
But how effective is Mounjaro when compared to other weight loss injections? Wegovy works in a similar way to Mounjaro but targets just one hormonal pathway: GLP-1. This may mean Mounjaro leads to better weight loss results. A study of patients with diabetes found that Mounjaro resulted in greater weight loss than Wegovy. However, more studies in non-diabetic patients are needed to directly compare the two medications.
Improvement in Weight-Related Health Problems
Mounjaro is not just effective for weight loss. As it was first developed as a medication for type 2 diabetes, it follows that Mounjaro is effective at improving blood sugar control and insulin levels.
One study suggests there are additional health benefits associated with Mounjaro. Non-diabetic individuals experienced lower blood pressure readings and blood cholesterol levels after taking the medication for 72 weeks. More than 95% of participants who were diagnosed with pre-diabetes at the start of the trial had normal blood sugar readings by the end (compared to 62% in the control group).
There's some evidence that Mounjaro can reduce inflammation in the body and the likelihood of suffering a heart attack or stroke when taking it at the maximum dose, but these studies are small and more information is needed to say for sure.
Support for Long-Term Weight Management
It's important to continue taking Mounjaro in order to avoid a weight loss plateau or weight regain. This study found that individuals who lost weight after taking Mounjaro for 36 weeks experienced weight regain when they were later swapped to a placebo injection. However, almost 90% of participants who continued with Mounjaro maintained at least 80% of the weight they'd already lost.
There are no long-term studies on the weight loss effects of Mounjaro and more research is needed to understand the impact Mounjaro can have on weight over several years.
It may sound disconcerting that weight regain is common after stopping Mounjaro, but there are things you can to do avoid this.
Taking weight loss medication can make it easier to make the lifestyle changes needed to improve your health and lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way. When your hunger is reduced, it's easier to get into healthy routines and make new habits. This should make it easier to keep these habits up when you reach your target weight and stop taking Mounjaro.
Remember, Mounjaro is not a magical weight loss solution and is only effective when combined with a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise.

Who Should Avoid Mounjaro?
Previous studies have reported thyroid c cell tumours in rats, although this has not been confirmed in humans. FAQs
What side effects are there with Mounjaro?
Mounjaro can cause serious side effects such as pancreatitis, low blood sugar, serious allergic reactions, kidney problems, stomach problems and vision changes. If you experience blurred vision, severe upper abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or feeling dizzy or lightheaded, seek immediate medical help.
For a full list of side effects, see the patient information leaflet included with the item.
Who should not take Mounjaro for weight loss?
Mounjaro cannot be taken by anyone who: is allergic to it or any other ingredients in the product or has multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2). If you or any family member has ever had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), you must also not take Mounjaro.
Can I take Mounjaro if I'm not obese?
As with Wegovy, Mounjaro will only be prescribed for patients who meet minimum criteria based on their current BMI, whether they have a weight-related condition or any other medication they are taking. If you are not obese, you may not be suitable for treatment.
How much weight can you lose with Mounjaro?
Everyone is different, and your weight loss journey is unique to you. The amount of weight you lose with Mounjaro depends on how much you weigh to start with, and how well you follow a structured diet and exercise plan.
To give you a rough idea, people taking the highest dose of Mounjaro in placebo-controlled trials lost an average of 21% of their body weight over a 72 week period. During the same time period, 57% of people on the highest dose of Mounjaro lost 20% or more of their initial body weight compared to just 3% of people taking the placebo injection.
Can I use Mounjaro if I don’t have diabetes?
Yes, absolutely. Since 2023, Mounjaro has been licensed in the UK as a weight loss medication. This means individuals with a BMI of ≥30 (or ≥27 with a weight-related health condition) can now take Mounjaro to help them lose weight.
Mounjaro is also licensed to treat type 2 diabetes, and some individuals with this health condition take the medication to regulate their blood sugar levels. They may also notice that they lose weight whilst taking Mounjaro.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose and it's been less than 4 days (96 hours) since you were meant to take your medication, take your missed dose immediately.
If it's been longer than 4 days since your Mounjaro dose was due, skip this dose and take the next one as scheduled. Make sure not to take 2 doses of Mounjaro within 3 days of each other.
Are there alternatives to Mounjaro?
Whilst there are currently no other weight loss medications that target both the hormone pathways that Mounjaro does, there are other effective weight loss injections on the market like Wegovy. Your prescriber may suggest trying an alternative if Mounjaro doesn't work for you or if you're experiencing significant side effects.
Not all medications are suitable for everyone, and your medical history and the medication you take can affect the weight loss treatments that you're able to take. Weight loss tablets and weight loss surgery are some of the other options available to you.
It's best to discuss all these options with a healthcare professional to find the one that's most suitable for you and to help you understand the risks and benefits involved.
How long does it take to see results with Mounjaro?
Mounjaro starts working right away, but it can take several weeks before you notice that you're losing weight. As it takes at least 21 weeks to build up to the maximum dose of 15 mg, you may need to wait longer to notice any dramatic weight loss results.
Can I take Mounjaro with other medications?
Yes, Mounjaro can be taken with many medications after consultation with a medical professional. However, Mounjaro should not be taken with some diabetic medications like insulin, other weight loss drugs, and certain other medications that are known to interact with Mounjaro.
Before starting any new medication, it's important to discuss all the medications you're already taking with a healthcare professional. They will be able to advise you on whether it's safe for you to combine them.
