Nevolat is a prescription weight loss treatment that contains the active ingredient liraglutide. It is licensed for patients looking to lose weight who meet the BMI (body mass index) criteria. Liraglutide mimics GLP-1, the naturally occurring hormone released after eating. In doing do, it can control appetite, reduce hunger and help you lose weight. Suitable for adults with obesity or adults who are overweight but also have a weight related health condition.

Who can use Nevolat?

Nevolat weight loss injections can be used by adults who meet the BMI criteria. BMI is calculated using a patients initial body weight and height, and calculating a ratio.

Nevolat is indicated for weight management for adults with a BMI or 30 (obesity) or between 27 and 30 (overweight) and with a weight related medical condition. This could be diabetes, pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Before considering any weight loss treatment it is important to speak to your healthcare provider, particularly if you take other medications or have a history of other medical conditions. When completing a prescription request online, before issuing a prescribed treatment, your provider will assess your medical history to determine eligibility.

How does Nevolat work to support weight loss?

Nevolat works by mimicking the actions of a naturally occurring hormone in the body, glucagon like peptide-1 or GLP-1. By activating this hormone, it can take longer for the body to digest food which can also stay in the stomach for longer, leading to feelings of early fullness.

This early fullness feeling can help reduce calorie intake which can help inform better eating habits and avoid overeating. Many of us have been socially conditioned to eat 3 square meals a day which are generally highly processed and high in calories.

This treatment helps take eating back to basics, relying on your body's food noise and only eating if you really need to (i.e. in response to hunger). This can help avoid overeating and help to maintain a healthier body weight when you decide to come off the treatment.

How to use Nevolat: pen, dose and schedule

Where and how to inject

Nevolat is a once daily weight loss injection, injected under the skin, usually into the stomach, upper thigh or upper arm. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food though it should be injected around the same time each day. The injection sites should be rotated to reduce the risk of injection site reactions.

Nevolat comes in a pre-filled pen designed for easy self-injection. To use, follow the below steps:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly

  2. Remove the outer cap and attach a new needle to the pen

  3. Check the solution - it should be clear and colourless. Do not use if cloudy or contains particles

  4. Select your injection site and gently clean with an alcohol wipe

  5. Prepare the Nevolat pen by rotating the dose counter to the correct dose

  6. Remove the inner needle cap

  7. Inject under the skin at a 90-degree angle

  8. Hold the Nevolat pen in place for a few seconds to ensure the full dose has been delivered

  9. Safely remove the used needle and dispose in a sharps container

  10. Replace the cap and store appropriately

The dose counter shows each individual dose that can be injected, 0.6mg, 1.2mg, 1.8mg, 2.4mg and 3mg, making it easier to inject.

Dosing plan

Nevolat weight loss treatment starts at a low dose which is gradually increased over the first five weeks of treatment. Using the treatment in this way, reduces the risk of gastric side effects, allowing the body to gradually adjust to the treatment.

  • Week 1 - 0.6mg once daily

  • Week 2 - 1.2mg once daily

  • Week 3 - 1.8mg once daily

  • Week 4 - 2.4mg once daily

  • Week 5 onwards - 3mg once daily. This is the maintenance dose which you would then remain on for the remaining duration of your treatment. Do not inject Nevolat at any dose higher than 3mg once daily.

Missed or double doses

In the case of a missed dose, if it is remembered within 12 hours from when you usually inject, use as soon as you remember. However, if more than 12 hours have passed since you should have used Nevolat, you should skip the dose missed and inject your next dose the following day at the usual time.

Do not take an extra dose to make up for a dose thats missed. If too much Nevolat is taken, you should talk to a Dr or go to hospital. Double dosing could increase the risk of side effects, such as nausea, vomiting or low blood sugar.

How much weight could I lose with Nevolat?

Clinical trials show an average loss of 5-9% after 6-12 months of using the Nevolat weight loss injections alongside changes a balanced diet and exercise. This is greater than the small weight loss seen with placebo - between 2-3%.

Importantly, individual results can vary. This depends on a patients starting body weight and how consistent they are with both the treatment and adjustments to lifestyle changes.

What to eat and how to move while using Nevolat

Whilst a proven treatment, Nevolat works best when used alongside a healthy diet and regular physical activity. The treatment helps control appetite but long term sustainable weight loss depends on maintaining sustainable habits.

Following a balanced calorie controlled diet which focuses on whole foods and whole grains can help aid weight loss. Try to limit intake of high-fat and sugary foods and eat smaller, regular meals.

Regular meals, as opposed to skipping meals can help maintain energy levels throughout the day. Additionally, drink plenty of water which can help the treatment work better but also reduce the risk of side effects such as nausea or constipation.

In addition to this, increasing physical activity can help you burn more calories, tapping into your energy stores. There's benefit to all different types of workouts - focusing on consistency and gradually increasing the time of each session can help build a sustainable lifestyle which works alongside the daily injection.

Whilst you can drink alcohol whilst on Nevolat, it is important to limit intake to within national guidelines. The NHS recommends no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over 3 or more days. Excess alcohol consumption can increase the risk of severe side effects such as pancreatitis.

Side effects and safety

Common side effects

Like all medicines, Nevolat can cause side effects. The most common are nausea, constipation, tiredness, or a mild stomach upset.

Nausea can be managed by eating smaller, more frequent meals, taking regular sips of a cold drink or consuming ginger or peppermint symptoms. Weight loss treatments tend to cause nausea if more calories are consumed than are required or if you consume too many sugary or carb-heavy foods.

Serious but rare side effects

More serious side effects of Nevolat include pancreatitis or an allergic reaction.

If whilst on the Nevolat weight loss injections, you experience severe stomach pain which travels along your back, alongside nausea/sickness or a fever, you should stop treatment and seek immediate medical attention - this is a sign of pancreatitis.

Anaphylaxis or a severe allergic reaction is rare. If you experience swelling of the face, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or a severe rash or dizziness, stop the treatment and seek emergency medical attention.

Whilst nausea is a common side effect, prolonged nausea can lead to dehydration, particularly upon first starting the treatment. for this reason its important to drink plenty of water

Who should not use Nevolat

Whilst Nevolat can be prescribed safely to most individuals, it may not be appropriate for everyone. Patients with pre-existing medical conditons should be reviewed carefully by a prescriber as there are circumstances where Nevolat is contraindicated and should be avoided.

Nevolat should not be used in individuals with severe kidney or liver disease, as clinical experience in these groups is limited. In cases of mild to moderate kidney disease, treatment may be considered, but maintaining adequate hydration is essential to minimise the risk of complications.

For those with thyroid disease, treatment may be possible but should first be carefully assessed by a healthcare professional. Clinical studies in rodents have shown a risk of thyroid C-cell tumours, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) - a type of thyroid cancer. Although the relevance to humans remains unproven, Nevolat should be avoided in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or MEN2.

Like other weight loss medications, Nevolat has been associated with cases of acute pancreatitis - a medical emergency. Patients with a history of pancreatitis should be treated with caution, and therapy should be discontinued immediately if pancreatitis is suspected.

As rapid or significant weight loss can increase the risk of gallstone formation, patients who develop upper stomach pain with severe nausea suggestive of gallstones whilst on Nevolat treatment should stop and seek medical advice.

Nevolat is contraindicated in patients who are pregnant, as it may harm an unborn baby. It is also not recommended while breastfeeding, as it is unknown whether the medication is excreted in breast milk.

There is no clinical experience in patients with heart failure and therefore Nevolat is nor recommended for use in these patients.
